Boz
I completely agree that we need to keep our feet firmly on the ground, even – particularly – when we have our heads in (or above) the clouds. And we need to remember that ‘on the ground’ is where we live and not get too fixated on “Wow, those clouds, man!”

That’s a major reason for writing this post. I believe there’s a strong element of “Wow, those clouds!” in present-day physics – we need to get real, equip ourselves to deal with real issues, rather than being in our own heads too much (scientifically, not meditationally). For me, long-term viability of the human race is definitely a real-world issue (as per previous post).

Yes, I probably am advocating a new way of thinking – though in some ways it’s not new at all. In order for radio to become a reality, people (some people) had to first get their heads out into the ether and suss out the abstractions of electromagnetic waves – but real-world applications of radio waves are very down-to-earth (seen X-Factor recently?) Same principle applies to electricity and electrical appliances.

Fire was an enigma to the caveman, supernatural. Now it’s well understood and widely applicable – it also brings increased responsibility. At present wave-particle duality is an enigma to us ...

"solid sometimes and at other times light" does it perfectly for me!

A wonderful article.

Although I agree with the sentiment of the article - I can't help but feel that it is missing something. It is like a meditator that sees ultimate reality without any kind of framework to hold their ego - I think that particles and waves - forms - give us a kind of grounding. If I see everything as everything - life as a big soup (which I feel is a fundamental understanding) - then I might forget my wife and kids and not be able to take a step in any direction. After all - science is also about humanity. We need to be solid sometimes and at other times light.

Unless you are pointing to a new way of thinking altogether?
